Cavity Stability

Calculate two-mirror cavity g parameters and geometric stability.

Description

Two-mirror cavity stability uses signed curvature radii to form geometry parameters.

Two-mirror cavity stability uses signed curvature radii to form geometry parameters. This implementation excludes both strict stability boundaries.1

Calculate two-mirror cavity g parameters and geometric stability.

When to use Cavity Stability

Use this tool to calculate two-mirror cavity g parameters and geometric stability.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Cavity Stability and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter cavityLengthMeters, firstMirrorRadiusMeters, secondMirrorRadiusMeters using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read firstGParameter, secondGParameter, stabilityProduct, stable. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
cavityLengthMetersMirror separation (m)number; minimum: 0Required
firstMirrorRadiusMetersFirst mirror radius (m)numberRequired
secondMirrorRadiusMetersSecond mirror radius (m)numberRequired

Enter nonnegative cavity length and finite nonzero signed radii. Return both g values, stabilityProduct and strict flag. Zero length is accepted and yields product one and false.

g1=1−L/R1; g2=1−L/R2; stable if 0<g1g2<1

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Plane-mirror infinity cannot be entered. No mode size, astigmatism, thermal lens or marginal-boundary classification is supplied.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Resonator Stability: Calculate two-mirror resonator g parameters and test the strict stability interval. For a complementary task, use Folded-Cavity Astigmatism: Quantify tangential/sagittal waist mismatch in a folded cavity.
