Audience-Scan Exposure

Calculate accumulated scan exposure and compare it with a caller-supplied limit.

Description

Repeated beam passes accumulate radiant exposure from power, dwell time and area.

Repeated beam passes accumulate radiant exposure from power, dwell time and area. A caller-supplied limit gives the returned comparison its meaning.1, 2

Calculate accumulated scan exposure and compare it with a caller-supplied limit.

When to use Audience-Scan Exposure

Use this tool to calculate accumulated scan exposure and compare it with a caller-supplied limit.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Audience-Scan Exposure and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter averagePowerWatts, dwellSecondsPerPass, spotAreaSquareMeters, passCount, exposureLimitJPerM2 using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read radiantExposureJPerM2, limitMarginJPerM2, withinLimit. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
averagePowerWattsAverage beam power (W)number; minimum: 0Required
dwellSecondsPerPassDwell time per pass (s)number; minimum: 0Required
spotAreaSquareMetersSpot area (m²)number; minimum: 0Required
passCountPass countinteger; minimum: 0Required
exposureLimitJPerM2Caller exposure limit (J/m²)number; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative power, dwell and exposure limit, nonnegative integer pass count and positive spot area. Return J/m², margin and inclusive gate.

exposure=P×dwellPerPass×passes/area; margin=limit−exposure

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No permissible-exposure standard, pulse correction, scan failure, beam profile or audience-scanning approval is determined.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Audience Safe Distance: Estimate projector distance needed to meet a caller-supplied irradiance limit. For a complementary task, use Required Optical Density: Calculate required optical density from unprotected and permissible exposure values in matching units.
