Ablation Sampling Area

Estimate gross and nonoverlapping area sampled by a sequence of ablation pulses.

Description

Ablation sampling area multiplies circular spot area by pulse count.

Ablation sampling area multiplies circular spot area by pulse count. A supplied new-area fraction reduces the gross total for overlap.1

Estimate gross and nonoverlapping area sampled by a sequence of ablation pulses.

When to use Ablation Sampling Area

Use this tool to estimate gross and nonoverlapping area sampled by a sequence of ablation pulses.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Ablation Sampling Area and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter spotDiameterMicrometers, pulseCount, newAreaFractionPerPulse using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read singleSpotAreaSquareMicrometers, grossSampledAreaSquareMicrometers, effectiveNewAreaSquareMicrometers. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
spotDiameterMicrometersAblation spot diameter (µm)number; minimum: 0Required
pulseCountPulse countinteger; minimum: 0Required
newAreaFractionPerPulseNew-area fraction per pulsenumber; minimum: 0; maximum: 1Required

Enter nonnegative diameter µm, nonnegative integer pulses and fraction 0–1. Return all areas in µm².

spotArea=π(d/2)²; gross=spotArea×count; newArea=gross×fraction

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Output fieldMeaningValue type
singleSpotAreaSquareMicrometersSingle-spot area (µm²)number; minimum: 0
grossSampledAreaSquareMicrometersGross sampled area (µm²)number; minimum: 0
effectiveNewAreaSquareMicrometersEffective new area (µm²)number; minimum: 0

Limitations and assumptions

No actual spot intersection, scan geometry or removal depth is calculated. The same fraction applies even to the first pulse.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Ablation Threshold Fit: Fit a Liu ablation-threshold line from pulse energy and squared crater radius. For a complementary task, use Assist-Gas Cost Comparison: Compare caller-supplied assist-gas consumption and rework costs.
