Description
Calculate equal fence-post bay spacing over a supplied run.
Landscape geometry distinguishes plan area, depth, void fraction, grade, center spacing and nominal clearances. A horizontal-per-vertical slope is the inverse orientation of rise/run, and post counts differ from bay counts. Supplied geometric terms do not establish stability, drainage, accessibility or safe construction.
Calculate equal fence-post bay spacing over a supplied run.
When to use this tool
Use Fence Post Bay Equal Spacing when you already have totalRun, postCount and need to calculate equal fence-post bay spacing over a supplied run.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter totalRun, postCount. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read bayCount, equalCenterSpacing. Use the output convention below.
Require run>=0 and safe whole postCount>=2; bays=posts-1 and centerSpacing=run/bays.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| totalRun | Total Run | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| postCount | At least two posts in an open chain, making postCount-1 bays; no closed-loop correction. | Required. Safe integer; minimum 2. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| bayCount | Bay Count | Required. Safe integer. |
| equalCenterSpacing | Equal Center Spacing | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Assumes one open chain of posts; corner layout, post width, foundations, material strength and compliance are excluded.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use a verified site survey and complete dimensioned layout for a landscape design. Include material behavior, drainage, ground conditions and the applicable requirements when local volumes, grades or spacing calculations cannot answer the full question.
