MET Intensity Bands

Classify MET intensity using caller-selected light/moderate/vigorous boundaries.

Description

MET intensity classification uses two caller-supplied band boundaries.

MET intensity classification uses two caller-supplied band boundaries. Equality moves a value into the higher adjacent band.1

Classify MET intensity using caller-selected light/moderate/vigorous boundaries.

When to use MET Intensity Bands

Use this tool to classify MET intensity using caller-selected light/moderate/vigorous boundaries.

Prepare the measured movement, timing, load or preassigned score requested. Keep protocols, units, paired measurements and caller-selected thresholds consistent.

How to use MET Intensity Bands and understand its results

  1. Prepare the measured movement, timing, load or preassigned score requested. Keep protocols, units, paired measurements and caller-selected thresholds consistent.
  2. Enter metValue, lightUpperMet, vigorousLowerMet using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read intensityBand, distanceToVigorousMet. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
metValueMet valuenumberRequired
lightUpperMetLight upper metnumberRequired
vigorousLowerMetVigorous lower metnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative MET, positive light boundary and a strictly greater vigorous boundary. Return band and signed distance to vigorous.

light if MET<lightUpper; moderate if MET<vigorousLower; else vigorous

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No MET measurement or standard activity guideline is embedded.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Weekly MET Minutes: Sum weekly MET-minutes across activities against caller-defined bounds. For a complementary task, use Talk Test Intensity Screen: Classify self-reported talk-test effort without claiming measured ventilatory thresholds.
