Gait Duty Factor

Calculate stance duty factor and compare against a supplied walking cutoff.

Description

Gait duty factor is stance duration divided by total cycle duration.

Gait duty factor is stance duration divided by total cycle duration. A caller cutoff gives the walking-related flag its interpretation.1

Calculate stance duty factor and compare against a supplied walking cutoff.

When to use Gait Duty Factor

Use this tool to calculate stance duty factor and compare against a supplied walking cutoff.

Prepare the measured movement, timing, load or preassigned score requested. Keep protocols, units, paired measurements and caller-selected thresholds consistent.

How to use Gait Duty Factor and understand its results

  1. Prepare the measured movement, timing, load or preassigned score requested. Keep protocols, units, paired measurements and caller-selected thresholds consistent.
  2. Enter stanceSeconds, gaitCycleSeconds, walkingDutyCutoff using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read dutyFactor, stancePercent, aboveWalkingCutoff. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Enter nonnegative stance no greater than positive cycle duration and cutoff 0–1. Return factor, percentage and inclusive ≥cutoff flag.

duty=stance/cycle; stance%=100duty

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No flight detection, gait diagnosis or universal walking cutoff is supplied.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Double Support Gait Percent: Measure fraction of a gait cycle with both feet on the ground. For a complementary task, use Ground Contact Aerial Ratio: Compare running ground-contact and aerial times.
