Loudness Gain

Calculate loudness gain and projected true peak.

Description

A loudness adjustment estimates the gain needed to reach a target integrated LUFS value.

A loudness adjustment estimates the gain needed to reach a target integrated LUFS value. The same gain is applied to the supplied true peak.1

Calculate loudness gain and projected true peak.

When to use Loudness Gain

Use this tool to calculate loudness gain and projected true peak.

Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.

How to use Loudness Gain and understand its results

  1. Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.
  2. Enter measuredLufs, targetLufs, currentTruePeakDbtp, maximumTruePeakDbtp using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read gainAdjustmentDb, projectedTruePeakDbtp, peakWithinLimit. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
measuredLufsMeasured integrated loudness (LUFS)numberRequired
targetLufsTarget integrated loudness (LUFS)numberRequired
currentTruePeakDbtpCurrent true peak (dBTP)numberRequired
maximumTruePeakDbtpMaximum true peak (dBTP)numberRequired

Enter finite signed loudness/peak values and maximum true peak. Return gain, predicted peak and inclusive peak≤maximum flag.

gainDb=targetLUFS−measuredLUFS; predictedPeak=currentPeak+gain

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No audio is analyzed or changed. Dynamics, clipping, limiting and actual post-processing peaks require separate measurement.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Tape-Sync Drift: Measure tape-sync duration drift against a supplied tolerance. For a complementary task, use Package Runtime: Total broadcast package elements against a runtime limit.
