Dimension Mark Check
Check dimension separators in copy.
Description
Dimension notation can use either the multiplication sign or the letter x between numbers.
Dimension notation can use either the multiplication sign or the letter x between numbers. This scan checks those patterns in supplied text.1
Check dimension separators in copy.
When to use Dimension Mark Check
Use this tool to check dimension separators in copy.
Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.
How to use Dimension Mark Check and understand its results
- Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.
- Enter copy, requiredSeparator using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read asciiSeparatorCount, multiplicationSeparatorCount, usesRequiredSeparator. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| copy | Copy containing dimensions | string | Required |
| requiredSeparator | Required dimension separator | string; one of "x", "×" | Required |
Enter text and the required separator, either x or ×. Match a digit, optional whitespace, selected symbol and digit; count both patterns, then apply the requested convention. Return counts and gate. No dimension pattern yields false.
correct=number × number, incorrect=number x number; passes=correct>0 AND incorrect=0 Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| asciiSeparatorCount | ASCII dimension separators | integer; minimum: 0 |
| multiplicationSeparatorCount | Multiplication-sign separators | integer; minimum: 0 |
| usesRequiredSeparator | Uses only the required separator | boolean |

} Limitations and assumptions
No unit consistency, dimensions, decimals or full mathematical expression is parsed.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Extremely large text inputs are rejected. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Percent Range Style: Validate percentage-range punctuation and repeated percent signs. For a complementary task, use CSV Text Cleaner: Remove a UTF-8 BOM, normalize line endings, and clean a CSV header.
