Description
Compute (-symbols) modulo positive blockSize for paddingSymbols and multiply by bitsPerSymbol for paddingBits.
A code's symbol cost, length, overhead, and expected rate use different denominators. An ideal information budget is not necessarily the measured size of a practical encoded message.
Compute (-symbols) modulo positive blockSize for paddingSymbols and multiply by bitsPerSymbol for paddingBits.
When to use this tool
Use Codebook Fixed Block Padding Cost when you need one explicit coding-cost or redundancy component.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter symbols, blockSize, bitsPerSymbol. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read paddingSymbols, paddingBits. Use the output convention below.

} Limitations and assumptions
- No padding is needed for exact multiples or zero symbols; contents, coding overhead, and physical storage rounding are not modeled.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
