Gauge Accumulation Interval Depth Tool

Compute an explicit nonnegative gauge increment; a declared reset uses caller-supplied post-reset accumulation only.

Description

Use endReading-startReading without reset, or postResetReading alone when reset is declared.

Precipitation and evaporation records distinguish water depth, catchment area, volume, and observation duration. Converting among them requires coherent units and a clear measured or modeled basis.

Use endReading-startReading without reset, or postResetReading alone when reset is declared.

When to use this tool

Use Gauge Accumulation Interval Depth when you need one explicit water-depth, volume, or accumulation component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter startReading, endReading, resetOccurred, postResetReading. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read depth, usedReset. Inspect usedReset before interpreting the associated values.

Require nonnegative readings and an increasing counter when resetOccurred is false. Use endReading-startReading without reset, or postResetReading alone when reset is declared.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The reset branch omits any pre-reset accumulation; it is a caller-selected fallback, not a complete reconstruction of an interval that crossed reset.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check instrument records, unit conversions, temporal coverage, and a complete hydrologic model before interpreting runoff or water availability.
