Rating Curve Control Shift Tool

Apply a signed caller-supplied stage correction before using an external rating curve; no stage-discharge curve or shift is inferred.

Description

Add signed stageShift to observedStage for adjustedStage.

A water-level record is measured relative to a stated stage reference. Applying a supplied stage shift changes the reported level coordinate; converting stage to discharge requires a separate rating relation and suitable observations.

Add signed stageShift to observedStage for adjustedStage.

When to use this tool

Use Rating Curve Control Shift when you need to apply an explicitly signed stage adjustment to a supplied observation.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observedStage, stageShift. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read adjustedStage. Use the output convention below.

Add signed stageShift to observedStage for adjustedStage.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
observedStageObserved stage in one chosen length unit and reference convention.Required. Finite number.
stageShiftSigned shift to add to observedStage, in the same length unit.Required. Finite number.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
adjustedStageObserved stage plus supplied signed shift; not discharge.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use matching stage units and the intended sign convention; this does not select a shift, fit a rating curve, compute discharge, or verify gauge datum.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Verify the gauge datum, shift convention, and current rating information before using the value in a hydrologic assessment.
