Open Channel Wetted Perimeter Panel Term Tool

One straight bed panel plus explicitly included vertical sidewalls; interior panel boundaries should not be counted as wetted walls.

Description

Use the hypotenuse of horizontalWidth and the depth difference as bedLength.

Ideal water-storage and channel geometry uses dimensions, areas, and displacement fractions. Coherent length units determine areas and volumes; actual irregular geometry and hydraulic behavior require additional information.

Use the hypotenuse of horizontalWidth and the depth difference as bedLength.

When to use this tool

Use Open Channel Wetted Perimeter Panel Term when you need one explicit geometric component of a tank, bed, conduit, or channel.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter leftDepth, rightDepth, horizontalWidth, includeLeftWall, includeRightWall. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read bedLength, wettedPerimeter. Use the output convention below.

Use the hypotenuse of horizontalWidth and the depth difference as bedLength. Add each nonnegative side depth only when its wall flag is true for wettedPerimeter.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • All dimensions share units; this is one straight-bed panel with optional vertical walls, not the complete wetted perimeter of an arbitrary surveyed channel.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check the full surveyed geometry and the physical model before interpreting storage, capacity, or safe operation.
