hr Thematic Break Semantics

Identifies hr as a paragraph-level thematic break in a list of parsed HTML element names. A rendered horizontal line alone does not establish these semantics.

Description

The hr element represents a paragraph-level thematic break, such as a change of scene or topic.

The hr element represents a paragraph-level thematic break, such as a change of scene or topic. A visual horizontal rule produced by CSS alone does not imply that meaning.1

The tool returns thematicBreak, breakCount. The fields describe the supplied local pattern or effective state, or contain the formatted markup shown below.

When to use hr Thematic Break Semantics

Use this for the following task: Identifies hr as a paragraph-level thematic break in a list of parsed HTML element names. A rendered horizontal line alone does not establish these semantics. Provide the requested local fields extracted from the relevant element or attribute.

How to use hr Thematic Break Semantics and understand its results

  1. Prepare the parsed element names, attribute values or direct element-child lists requested below. Keep attribute presence separate from its value.
  2. Enter tags according to the field table, then run the tool.
  3. Read thematicBreak, breakCount. Check the effective state, recognized-token flags or generated markup against the rules below.
  4. Correct any reported local mismatch and check the resulting markup in its intended document and browser context.
Input fieldMeaningValue type and boundsRequirement
tagsTagslist of string; minimum entries 0; maximum entries 10000; each entry: maximum text length 10000Required

Supply parsed element names. Return one flag per entry and the total number of hr matches.

thematicBreak = parsed name is hr after ASCII case folding

The symbols and boundary conditions refer to the supplied fields and the implementation described above.

Limitations and assumptions

Supply parsed names without angle brackets. Matching folds ASCII uppercase letters without trimming surrounding whitespace. The tool does not inspect surrounding prose or rendering.

The tool does not fetch a page, run a browser or validate an entire HTML document. Malformed tool requests produce input errors; valid requests can still report unrecognized values or failed local checks.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Choose u Unarticulated Annotation Usage when you need its operation: Identifies u as unarticulated non-textual annotation in parsed element names. Underlining does not give u hyperlink semantics. Choose Void Elements List Checker for the complementary operation: Checks parsed HTML element names against the 13 current void elements; names are ASCII case insensitive. This does not parse markup or classify obsolete elements.
