Subirrigation Trough Fill Depth Calculator

Rectangular trough liquid depth including measured submerged displacement; assumes constant section, no capillary irrigation prediction.

Description

Calculate rectangular trough fill depth including entered submerged displacement.

Water and submerged occupied volume together determine the nominal fill height in a rectangular trough. Counting displacement is necessary when using a measured water volume.

When to use this tool

Calculate rectangular trough fill depth including entered submerged displacement. Use it when the input measurements and conventions below match the operation you need.

  • Prepare waterLiters, troughLengthM, troughWidthM, occupiedVolumeLiters, respecting the measurement basis and boundaries below.
  • Compare the worked example with your intended operation before reusing its result.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter every field in the input table using the stated units and exact supported selector spelling where applicable.
  2. Run the tool. Correct input errors before interpreting an output.
  3. Read the result fields below; use accompanying flags and the stated sign, boundary or model convention when interpreting a number.

Water and occupied displacement volumes must be nonnegative and trough length and width positive. fillDepthM equals (waterLiters plus occupiedVolumeLiters) divided by (1,000 times length times width).1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The trough is assumed rectangular with uniform horizontal area and the entered displacement submerged. Wall taper, overflow, drainage, capillary uptake and changes in displacement with depth are not modeled.
  • Every declared field is required and unexpected fields are rejected. Numeric inputs must be finite; input errors are distinct from a valid false result or an explicitly qualified output.
  • Extremely large inputs and nonfinite or excessively large outputs are rejected. List positions reported by the tool use zero-based indices unless stated otherwise.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Match the supplied measurements and reference context to the actual crop, material and site. A dimensional calculation or retrieved record is not a substitute for inspecting plant condition and applicable product instructions. Compare the scope of the nearby tools below before substituting one.
