Description

Validate ordered bounded integer years.

Archival records often contain bounded dates, editions, and source identifiers. Arithmetic on supplied coordinates can check consistency while leaving historical interpretation and authenticity unresolved.

Validate ordered bounded integer years.

When to use this tool

Use Source Date Not Before Not After Pair when you need a precise date-span or source-record bookkeeping step.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter notBeforeYear, notAfterYear. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read intervalLabel, widthYears. Use the output convention below.

Validate ordered bounded integer years. Display their bracketed interval and return notAfterYear minus notBeforeYear for widthYears.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The label includes both endpoints but width is coordinate difference, not an inclusive year count; historical calendars and absence of year zero are not interpreted.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the original catalog and documented calendar or dating convention when historical interpretation matters.
