Whole Slide Tile Overlap Pixel Budget Tool

Regular rectangular tile mosaic dimensions with fixed overlaps, without image registration or tissue segmentation.

Description

Subtract overlap once between adjacent tiles for mosaic dimensions and compare mosaic pixel area with summed tile areas for pixelsSaved.

Histology images and sections have pixel scales, physical dimensions, cutting indexes, and processing changes. Geometric arithmetic depends on those conventions and does not identify tissue or establish diagnostic adequacy.

Subtract overlap once between adjacent tiles for mosaic dimensions and compare mosaic pixel area with summed tile areas for pixelsSaved.

When to use this tool

Use Whole Slide Tile Overlap Pixel Budget when you need one explicit histology image-scale or section-geometry component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter tileWidth, tileHeight, columns, rows, overlapX, overlapY. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read mosaicWidth, mosaicHeight, pixelsSaved. Use the output convention below.

Require positive integer tile dimensions and grid sizes and overlaps smaller than each tile axis. Subtract overlap once between adjacent tiles for mosaic dimensions and compare mosaic pixel area with summed tile areas for pixelsSaved.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • PixelsSaved counts repeated coverage under an ideal rectangular grid, not compression savings or registered image quality; no stitching, distortion, or tissue interpretation is performed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Verify calibration, section preparation, image registration, and the complete sampling protocol before interpreting tissue measurements.
