Reptile Shed Date Interval Width Tool

Measure the date-only width of an explicit ordered reptile-shedding observation bracket without inferring a shedding date.

Description

Measure the width of a recorded reptile-shed date interval.

Reptile and amphibian records distinguish specimen identity, anatomical measurement, observation effort, date uncertainty and location protection. Unobserved status differs from recorded absence, while a call-overlap label uses supplied intervals. These local records and geometric terms do not identify a species, infer health or establish adequate field practice.

Measure the width of a recorded reptile-shed date interval.

When to use this tool

Use Reptile Shed Date Interval Width when you already have earliestDate, latestDate and need to measure the width of a recorded reptile-shed date interval.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter earliestDate, latestDate. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read intervalDays. Use the output convention below.

Parse real UTC dates and require latest>=earliest; return latest-earliest in calendar days.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
earliestDateEarliest DateRequired. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. Real proleptic Gregorian YYYY-MM-DD; four-digit years 0000-9999 accepted.
latestDateLatest DateRequired. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. Real proleptic Gregorian YYYY-MM-DD; four-digit years 0000-9999 accepted.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
intervalDayslatestDate-earliestDate; elapsed width, so identical dates give zero rather than one inclusive day.Required. Safe integer.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Equal dates give zero width, not one inclusive observation day; no shed event, age, health or actual date is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review original observations, specimens, calibrated images and survey logs for substantive interpretation. Use the appropriate complete biological or survey method, and protect underlying location data; local labels and display replacements do not perform those tasks.
