Description
Compare a cover-object temperature with a supplied reference.
Reptile and amphibian records distinguish specimen identity, anatomical measurement, observation effort, date uncertainty and location protection. Unobserved status differs from recorded absence, while a call-overlap label uses supplied intervals. These local records and geometric terms do not identify a species, infer health or establish adequate field practice.
Compare a cover-object temperature with a supplied reference.
When to use this tool
Use Cover Object Temperature Reference Offset when you already have referenceTemperature, measuredTemperature and need to compare a cover-object temperature with a supplied reference.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter referenceTemperature, measuredTemperature. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read signedGap. Use the output convention below.
Return measuredTemperature-referenceTemperature using the same temperature scale.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| referenceTemperature | Reference Temperature | Required. Finite number. |
| measuredTemperature | Measured Temperature | Required. Finite number. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| signedGap | Signed Gap | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- No object, microclimate, animal condition, safe temperature or suitable observation practice is assessed.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Review original observations, specimens, calibrated images and survey logs for substantive interpretation. Use the appropriate complete biological or survey method, and protect underlying location data; local labels and display replacements do not perform those tasks.
