Amphibian Water Presence Observation Code

Encode supplied water and amphibian presence flags while keeping an unobserved visit separate.

Description

Combine supplied amphibian and water presence flags within an observation state.

Reptile and amphibian records distinguish specimen identity, anatomical measurement, observation effort, date uncertainty and location protection. Unobserved status differs from recorded absence, while a call-overlap label uses supplied intervals. These local records and geometric terms do not identify a species, infer health or establish adequate field practice.

When to use this tool

Use Amphibian Water Presence Observation Code when you already have observed, waterPresent, amphibianPresent and need to combine supplied amphibian and water presence flags within an observation state.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observed, waterPresent, amphibianPresent. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read code. Use the output convention below.

If observed=false return not-observed regardless of presence flags; otherwise return water-and-amphibian, water-only, amphibian-without-water or neither.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
observedWhen false returns not-observed regardless of the other two flags; those flags are not rejected.Required. Boolean.
waterPresentWater PresentRequired. Boolean.
amphibianPresentAmphibian PresentRequired. Boolean.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Positive presence flags on an unobserved record are ignored rather than rejected. No animal, water, habitat condition or biological interpretation is assessed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review original observations, specimens, calibrated images and survey logs for substantive interpretation. Use the appropriate complete biological or survey method, and protect underlying location data; local labels and display replacements do not perform those tasks.
