Chevron Apex Height Calculator

Symmetric ideal chevron apex from measured half-span and angle, top-left y-down coordinates.

Description

A chevron apex can be derived from half-span, arm angle and a baseline.

A chevron apex can be derived from half-span, arm angle and a baseline.1

The coordinate model must specify that upward rise subtracts from viewer y.

When to use Chevron Apex Height Calculator

Use this tool to calculate or review the supplied observations under the stated rules. Establish the source tradition, viewing frame, coordinate units and independently annotated features.

How to use Chevron Apex Height Calculator and understand its results

  1. Establish the source tradition, viewing frame, coordinate units and independently annotated features.
  2. Enter halfSpan, armAngleDegrees, baseY, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
  3. Read result.apexY, result.apexRise, using the output meanings and calculation rules below.
  4. Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.

armAngleDegreesArm angle degreesnumberRequired
baseYBase ynumberRequired

Use a strictly positive half-span, angle in [0,90) degrees and finite baseline y. Convert degrees to radians, calculate halfSpan×tan(angle), and subtract that rise from baseline y. Return rise and apex y.

rise=halfSpan×tan(angleDegrees×π/180); apexY=baseY−rise

Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Apex y can be negative and is not clipped to a field. The model assumes straight symmetric arms and does not calculate arm thickness or a heraldic convention.

Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite. Extremely large composite outputs are rejected.

Alternative or Complementary methods

For a related step, use Bend Diagonal Angle Geometry Checker (45°): A diagonal's angle follows from its horizontal run and vertical rise in a specified coordinate model. For a complementary comparison, use Chevron Number of Stacked Rows Counter: Stacked chevrons can be counted as annotated rows.
