Description
Return (1+rate)^(-timeYears) and utility × durationYears times that factor.
Health-economic utility models combine time with a supplied valuation scale. The reference anchors, duration units, survival basis, and discount timing determine the interpretation of each utility-year contribution.
Return (1+rate)^(-timeYears) and utility × durationYears times that factor.
When to use this tool
Use Utility Discount One Year Factor when you need one explicit utility or modeled outcome component.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter utility, durationYears, timeYears, annualDiscountRate. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read discountFactor, discountedQalys. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative durationYears and timeYears and annualDiscountRate greater than -1. Return (1+rate)^(-timeYears) and utility × durationYears times that factor.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| utility | Dimensionless supplied health-economic utility under one common valuation basis; may be negative. | Required. Finite number. |
| durationYears | Nonnegative duration in years on the model’s stated time basis. | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| timeYears | Time Years | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| annualDiscountRate | Annual discount rate as a fraction, for example 0.03 for 3%. | Required. Finite number; strictly above -1. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| discountFactor | Discount Factor | Required. Finite number. |
| discountedQalys | Discounted Qalys | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Utility is dimensionless under a common valuation basis and output is discounted utility-years; discount rate and timing are supplied, without selecting a policy recommendation or clinical outcome.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check the complete evaluation model and source valuations; arithmetic utility values are not individual clinical assessments or judgments of personal worth.
