Keccak-256 Hash Generator

Calculate a Keccak-256 digest from UTF-8 text, as used by Ethereum; Keccak-256 is not byte-for-byte equivalent to SHA3-256.

Description

Calculate a 256-bit Keccak digest from UTF-8 text and display it as lowercase hexadecimal.

Keccak-256 Hash Generator converts Unicode text to UTF-8 bytes and calculates a 256-bit Keccak result. Keccak-256 uses the original Keccak padding convention. That domain separation differs from FIPS SHA-3, so matching output width does not make the two digests interchangeable.1

When to use Keccak-256 Hash Generator

Use this exact variant when a protocol, file manifest, blockchain, test vector, or interoperating system names it. Hash names and output sizes are not interchangeable even when they belong to the same family.

How Keccak-256 Hash Generator works

Keccak-256 uses the original Keccak padding convention. That domain separation differs from FIPS SHA-3, so matching output width does not make the two digests interchangeable.1

How the Keccak-256 function processes input

  1. Encode the entered text as UTF-8 bytes.
  2. Process the bytes with the selected algorithm and its exact parameters.
  3. Render the result in the canonical textual form shown by the tool.

Limitations and assumptions

  • A bare digest detects changes but does not authenticate who supplied the data.
  • Do not use a fast general-purpose digest directly for password storage.
  • Character encoding, Unicode normalization, whitespace, and line endings change the input bytes.

Alternative or Complementary approaches

Use SHA-256 for broad modern interoperability, HMAC when a shared secret must authenticate data, or a dedicated checksum when only accidental transmission errors are in scope.
