Glyph Overhang Optical Margin Term Tool

Calculate explicit glyph ink overhang beyond a zero-origin advance box without prescribing optical margin alignment.

Description

Describe a glyph's ink overhang relative to its supplied advance and origin.

Graphic-design metadata distinguishes font metrics, variable-font axes, fill rules, color labels and design-token units. Numeric axis differences and text labels do not render a font or apply a color profile. The source convention must match before comparing metrics or resolving a design-system reference.

Describe a glyph's ink overhang relative to its supplied advance and origin.

When to use this tool

Use Glyph Overhang Optical Margin Term when checking the stated font, color or design-token convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter advanceWidth, inkLeft, inkRight. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read leftOverhang, rightOverhang. Use the output convention below.

Require advanceWidth>=0 and inkRight>=inkLeft. Return max(0,-inkLeft) and max(0,inkRight-advanceWidth) as left/right overhang.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
advanceWidthAdvance WidthRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
inkLeftSigned left ink bound relative to glyph origin.Required. Finite number.
inkRightRight ink bound in the same origin/units, at least inkLeft.Required. Finite number.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
leftOverhangLeft OverhangRequired. Finite number.
rightOverhangRight OverhangRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Ink coordinates are relative to the glyph origin; overhang is not a kerning recommendation or a rendered text-layout assessment.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect actual fonts, rendered paths, color profiles and the complete applicable design-system specification for visual or production decisions.
