Melt Pond Fraction Albedo Feedback

Quantify area-weighted pond/ice albedo and incremental absorbed shortwave for supplied pond scenarios; no melt-rate or radiative-feedback climate prediction.

Description

Melt ponds and unponded ice can reflect different amounts of sunlight.

Melt ponds and unponded ice can reflect different amounts of sunlight. Their area fractions determine an effective albedo and absorbed shortwave flux.

Quantify area-weighted pond/ice albedo and incremental absorbed shortwave for supplied pond scenarios; no melt-rate or radiative-feedback climate prediction.

When to use Melt Pond Fraction Albedo Feedback

Use this for the following task: Quantify area-weighted pond/ice albedo and incremental absorbed shortwave for supplied pond scenarios; no melt-rate or radiative-feedback climate prediction.

Prepare the measurements and calibration parameters in the declared units. Keep vector entries aligned and choose a consistent spatial frame and time basis.

How to use Melt Pond Fraction Albedo Feedback and understand its results

  1. Prepare the measurements and calibration parameters in the declared units. Keep vector entries aligned and choose a consistent spatial frame and time basis.
  2. Enter pondFractions, pondAlbedo, unpondedIceAlbedo, incomingShortwaveWattsPerM2 using the field table, then run the tool.
  3. Read effectiveAlbedos, absorbedShortwaveWattsPerM2, extraAbsorptionRelativeToUnpondedWattsPerM2. Interpret flags, units, ordering and placeholder values using the rules below.
  4. Review any reported issue or failed check, correct the supplied values when appropriate, and verify the result in its intended context.

Require nonempty fractions/albedos in [0,1] and nonnegative incoming shortwave. Compute each scenario and subtract the unponded absorption baseline.1

α = f αpond + (1−f) αice; absorbed = incoming(1−α)

Limitations and assumptions

An absorption difference can be negative. This does not convert radiation into melt or predict climate feedback.

Constants and empirical coefficients are supplied rather than calibrated. Check units and observational applicability before interpreting the model. Malformed requests produce input errors. A successfully evaluated request can still contain false flags, empty result lists or a result outside the supplied threshold; those outcomes have the meanings stated above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Choose PDD Positive Degree Days Melt for this operation: Apply separate snow/ice positive-degree-day factors sequentially while exhausting a supplied snow-water reservoir; interval temperatures are means and no snow replenishment is assumed. For a complementary task, use Geothermal Flux Basal Melt for this operation: Convert net geothermal-minus-conductive basal heat to signed ice melt under pressure-melting conditions; negative flux represents freezing potential, not guaranteed actual freezing.

The implementation reference documents the exact calculation, supported input shapes and returned fields.
