Caregiver Handoff Coverage One Gap Tool

Union coverage, overlap and internal gap of two supplied caregiver duty intervals; no staffing adequacy decision.

Description

Return overlap, nonnegative separation between intervals as uncoveredGap, and summed durations minus overlap as coveredDuration.

Research schedules and activity records use numeric intervals, pauses, and overlap conventions. The same endpoints can produce different summaries depending on whether simultaneous activities are counted once or separately.

Return overlap, nonnegative separation between intervals as uncoveredGap, and summed durations minus overlap as coveredDuration.

When to use this tool

Use Caregiver Handoff Coverage One Gap when you need a time-budget or interval calculation in geriatric research records.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstStart, firstEnd, secondStart, secondEnd. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read overlap, uncoveredGap, coveredDuration. Use the output convention below.

Require ordered caregiver intervals. Return overlap, nonnegative separation between intervals as uncoveredGap, and summed durations minus overlap as coveredDuration.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Touching intervals have zero gap and zero overlap; the calculation does not establish availability, adequate staffing, care quality, or safe handoff.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Reconcile the full schedule and source timing convention before aggregation. Use an appropriate observational or clinical assessment for questions that duration arithmetic cannot answer.
