Shoreline Tide Stage Reference Offset Tool

Remove an explicitly supplied signed horizontal tide-stage offset from a shoreline coordinate without estimating beach slope or water level.

Description

Subtract a supplied horizontal tide-stage offset from a shoreline coordinate.

Geomorphic measurements distinguish signed coordinates, grain-size scales, profile derivatives and transported-mass or cross-section bases. A supplied datum adjustment or threshold does not detect a landform or establish a process. Plan distance, profile second derivative and slope-normalized curvature are different quantities.

Subtract a supplied horizontal tide-stage offset from a shoreline coordinate.

When to use this tool

Use Shoreline Tide Stage Reference Offset when checking the stated local landform, sediment, profile or coordinate convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observedShorelineCoordinate, suppliedHorizontalTideOffset. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read referenceCoordinate. Use the output convention below.

Return observedShorelineCoordinate-suppliedHorizontalTideOffset on a common signed coordinate basis.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input

Limitations and assumptions

  • The offset is supplied, not estimated from a tide or beach profile; no actual shoreline normalization or survey datum is validated.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use calibrated surveys, mapped geometry and suitable complete sediment/terrain models for trends, process interpretation, uncertainty or hazard assessment.
