Grain Size Support Share Tool

Count only wholly supported supplied grain-size bins, without prorating unknown within-bin distributions.

Description

Sum mass only for bins fully inside that interval and divide by total mass, otherwise return zero with defined false.

Sediment and soil calculations distinguish mass basis, solid density, bulk volume, and grain-size conventions. Changing moisture or grain-size scale changes the denominator or coordinate, not the physical sample itself.

Sum mass only for bins fully inside that interval and divide by total mass, otherwise return zero with defined false.

When to use this tool

Use Grain Size Support Share when you need an explicit sediment or material-basis conversion.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter binMasses, binLowerDiameters, binUpperDiameters, supportedLower, supportedUpper. Keep parallel arrays aligned. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read totalMass, fullySupportedMass, supportedShare, defined. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.

Require aligned nonnegative masses and positive ordered size bounds, plus a positive supported interval. Sum mass only for bins fully inside that interval and divide by total mass, otherwise return zero with defined false.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Partially overlapping bins contribute nothing rather than a prorated mass; bin overlap, grain classification, source quality, and representative sampling are not verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a traceable laboratory and sampling method for the required material property. Align wet/dry basis, solid versus bulk density, grain-size scale, and interval definitions before comparing samples.
