Description
Return their arithmetic mean and half their difference.
Latitude bands use ordered north/south angular bounds. Coordinate midpoints and membership describe the angular axis; they do not automatically describe an equal-area center or the boundary of a real region.
Return their arithmetic mean and half their difference.
When to use this tool
Use Latitude Band Center when you need a supplied latitude-band comparison or midpoint.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter south, north. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read midLatitude, halfWidth. Use the output convention below.
Require south at least -90, north at most 90, and south no greater than north. Return their arithmetic mean and half their difference.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| south | South | Required. Finite number; minimum -90. |
| north | North | Required. Finite number; maximum 90. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| midLatitude | Mid Latitude | Required. Finite number. |
| halfWidth | Half Width | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Inputs and outputs use the same angular unit, conventionally degrees under these bounds. The midpoint is a latitude-coordinate midpoint, not an equal-area or geodesic center; zero-width bands are allowed.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use the actual regional geometry or a spherical/ellipsoidal area method when area and spatial extent matter. Keep endpoint inclusion and angular units explicit.
