Description
Sum them for totalAnions, use oxygen plus half the other counts for oxygenEquivalent, and twice oxygen plus the other counts for negativeCharge.
Stoichiometric calculations translate supplied amounts, formula counts, site occupancies, and valences into a common formula-unit basis. Arithmetic charge or occupancy balance does not prove that a mineral composition is chemically realizable.
Sum them for totalAnions, use oxygen plus half the other counts for oxygenEquivalent, and twice oxygen plus the other counts for negativeCharge.
When to use this tool
Use Mineral Hydroxyl Anion Oxygen Equivalent when you need one supplied-formula, charge, or occupancy term.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter hydroxylCount, fluorineCount, chlorineCount, oxygenCount. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read totalAnions, oxygenEquivalent, negativeCharge. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative hydroxyl, fluorine, chlorine, and oxygen counts. Sum them for totalAnions, use oxygen plus half the other counts for oxygenEquivalent, and twice oxygen plus the other counts for negativeCharge.1

} Limitations and assumptions
- Counts share a formula-unit basis and represent OH−, F−, Cl−, and O²− under the model. Oxygen equivalent is a charge-equivalent normalization, not a direct atom total or a complete mineral formula.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Normalize and evaluate the complete mineral analysis using the intended chemical model. Verify formulas, molar masses, oxidation states, site capacities, and analytical uncertainty independently.
