Isotope Ratio Mixing Weight Tool

Mix isotope ratios using explicit denominator-isotope amounts, not bulk mass weights.

Loading tool…

Description

Scale both amounts by their maximum, form normalized weights, and interpolate the two ratios stably; return mixedRatio and firstWeight.

An isotope ratio depends on which isotope is in the numerator and denominator. Delta notation compares a ratio with a reference on a per-mil scale, while mixing and decay models require explicit amount and system assumptions.

Scale both amounts by their maximum, form normalized weights, and interpolate the two ratios stably; return mixedRatio and firstWeight.

When to use this tool

Use Isotope Ratio Mixing Weight when you need a stated isotope-reference, mixing, or one-step decay calculation.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstRatio, secondRatio, firstDenominatorIsotopeAmount, secondDenominatorIsotopeAmount. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read mixedRatio, firstWeight. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative isotope ratios and nonnegative denominator-isotope amounts, with at least one amount positive. Scale both amounts by their maximum, form normalized weights, and interpolate the two ratios stably; return mixedRatio and firstWeight.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Exact ratio mixing uses amounts of the denominator isotope, not arbitrary total sample masses or total element concentrations. Ratios must use the same isotope orientation and no analytical fractionation correction is applied.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the appropriate reference materials and full isotope model for interpretation. Preserve ratio orientation, reference scale, denominator-isotope weighting, uncertainty, and any open-system or fractionation effects.
