Isotope Ratio Mass Bias Reference Term Tool

Solve beta from measured/reference isotope ratio=(numerator/denominator isotope mass ratio)^beta using the explicitly ordered mass ratio.

Description

Solve a mass-bias exponent under an explicitly ordered isotope-ratio convention.

Geochemical results depend on analyte, matrix, dry/anhydrous basis, reference composition, isotope-ratio direction and censoring conventions. A normalized ratio or local correction is distinct from a validated mineral formula or geological interpretation. Operational extraction fractions and nominal site occupancies need their original analytical context.

Solve a mass-bias exponent under an explicitly ordered isotope-ratio convention.

When to use this tool

Use Isotope Ratio Mass Bias Reference Term when checking the stated geochemical reporting basis, local correction or reference convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter measuredRatio, referenceRatio, numeratorToDenominatorMassRatio. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read massBiasExponent. Use the output convention below.

Require positive measured/reference isotope ratios and a positive numerator/denominator mass ratio unequal to one. Return (log(measured)-log(reference))/log(massRatio) as massBiasExponent.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This follows measured/reference=massRatio^exponent; it does not apply the correction, estimate uncertainty or establish the correct isotope-pair convention.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified analytical methods, reference materials and appropriate complete geochemical models with qualified laboratory interpretation for actual results and safe handling.
