ClinVar Clinical Significance Star Rating Mapper
Decode ClinVar review stars, not clinical significance or a live database lookup. Bounded exact-key educational reference only; observations and applicability must be established independently.
Description
Decode ClinVar review stars, not clinical significance or a live database lookup.
ClinVar review stars summarize aspects of the evidence-review process, rather than whether a variant is pathogenic. Read the star count together with the record’s detailed review status and classification type.1
For aggregate germline and oncogenicity records, zero stars can mean that assertion criteria or a classification are missing, or that the individual variant was not classified. When assertion criteria are supplied but classifications conflict, the status has one star. Somatic clinical-impact review status uses different rules and does not assess consensus.
When to use this tool
Use this educational lookup to retrieve a stored context note for a star count. Check the actual ClinVar record separately to identify its classification type and detailed review status.
- Prepare the supplied key fields for this operation.
- Compare the complete example with the representation used by your own input before carrying the result into another step.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter key as the text "0", "1", "2", "3" or "4" for the star count you want to look up.
- Run the lookup. Unsupported keys cause an input error.
- Read result.reference as a stored explanatory note, then check the actual ClinVar record. The note does not classify a variant.
Supply key exactly as one of "0", "1", "2", "3", "4". Check for that own key in the fixed local table and return its stored reference text unchanged. An unsupported key is an input error, rather than a null result; there is no network request, fuzzy matching or dynamic text generation.2
| Input field | Meaning and representation | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| key | Star count expressed as a string, selecting one entry in the fixed local table. | "0", "1", "2", "3", "4" |
| Output field | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| result | Object containing the named outputs below. |
| result.reference | The unchanged stored text for the supported exact key; unsupported keys cause an input error. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The tool returns stored text without querying ClinVar or reviewing a variant. The zero-star entry contains imprecise wording about conflicts; use the official review-status definitions above rather than treating that phrase as a zero-star rule. Star count alone is not a pathogenicity classification.
- Every declared top-level field is required and unexpected fields are rejected. Numeric inputs must be finite; ordinary text fields are bounded to 8,192 UTF-16 code units, with tighter operation-specific limits where stated.
- Ordinary string lists have at most 128 entries of at most 128 code units each; numeric lists and matrices have separate bounded size checks. Nonfinite results and excessively large serialized outputs are rejected.
- Indexes are zero-based and spans have an exclusive end unless explicitly stated otherwise. A valid false, null or empty-list result is distinct from malformed input.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Consult the complete ClinVar record and its current NCBI review-status definitions. Variant classification requires a separate evidence-review process; an accession, star count or stored note does not provide that assessment.
