Survey Option Position Share Tool

Calculate survey option position share from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return (index-origin)/(optionCount-1) when more than one option exists; otherwise return zero with defined false.

Survey display order, self-description, missingness, and record support are distinct research properties. Literal tokens and counts can preserve those distinctions without inferring a person's identity, preferences, or the meaning of an unprovided response.

Return (index-origin)/(optionCount-1) when more than one option exists; otherwise return zero with defined false.

When to use this tool

Use Survey Option Position Share when you need a transparent survey-record, display-order, or time-use calculation.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter index, optionCount, origin. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read share, defined. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.

Require origin zero or one, positive integer optionCount, and an in-range integer index. Return (index-origin)/(optionCount-1) when more than one option exists; otherwise return zero with defined false.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
indexPosition under the documented indexing convention; inspect any absence sentinel.Required. Safe integer.
optionCountOption CountRequired. Safe integer; minimum 1.
originIndexing origin; permitted values and resulting indexes are defined above.Required. Safe integer.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
shareDimensionless share on the numerator and denominator basis stated above.Required. Finite number.
definedFalse for a single-option list; zero share is then a placeholder rather than a normalized ordering.Required. Boolean.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is a normalized display position, not a measurement or ranking of identity or preference. Inspect defined for the single-option placeholder, and retain the chosen indexing origin.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the study's consent, vocabulary, missingness, and disclosure methodology for interpretation. Retain self-described information and assess sampling and privacy separately from local record arithmetic.
