Brilliance Index Approximation

Aggregate independently measured returned/incident optical flux under stated matched angular exposures; no faceted ray-trace, perceptual brilliance grade or radiometric completeness inferred.

Description

Returned optical flux can be compared with incident flux under matched angular exposure.

Returned optical flux can be compared with incident flux under matched angular exposure. A measured efficiency proxy differs from an observer-dependent brilliance grade.1

Aggregate independently measured returned/incident optical flux under stated matched angular exposures; no faceted ray-trace, perceptual brilliance grade or radiometric completeness inferred.

When to use Brilliance Index Approximation

Use this tool to aggregate independently measured returned/incident optical flux under stated matched angular exposures; no faceted ray-trace, perceptual brilliance grade or radiometric completeness inferred.

Prepare the gemstone measurements, spectra or comparison data and any supplied calibration parameters. Check units, reference conditions and record alignment.

How to use Brilliance Index Approximation and understand its results

  1. Prepare the gemstone measurements, spectra or comparison data and any supplied calibration parameters. Check units, reference conditions and record alignment.
  2. Enter measuredReturnedFlux, measuredIncidentFlux, representedAngularWeights using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read angularWeightedReturnEfficiency, angularWeightedReturnedFlux. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
measuredReturnedFluxMeasured returned fluxlist of numberRequired
measuredIncidentFluxMeasured incident fluxlist of numberRequired
representedAngularWeightsRepresented angular weightslist of numberRequired

Pair nonnegative returned flux with strictly positive incident flux and angular weights. Return the weighted returned total and their ratio; the implementation does not clamp a measured ratio above 1.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

return efficiency=Σreturned flux × weight/Σincident flux × weight

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Angular coverage and radiometric calibration are supplied. No complete faceted ray trace or laboratory grade is performed.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Lustre Reflectivity Ratio: Audit measured specular/total reflected signal with independently supplied background and angular exposure, retaining signed overcorrection; not absolute reflectance, Fresnel theory or validated lustre grading. For a complementary task, use Scintillation Pattern Index: Integrate measured temporal brightness variation under piecewise-linear frames, retaining actual exposure; scalar scintillation proxy is not complete observer-dependent sparkle or commercial grade.
