Arxiv Preprint Velocity Doubling Fields Monitoring Note
Observed independently categorized arXivpreprint count changes across matched windows. Conditional constant-growth doubling,-1non-growth/undefined; no field quality, publication validity or inevitable technology acceleration inferred.
Description
Preprint counts measure publication activity within an adopted field and time window.
Preprint counts measure publication activity within an adopted field and time window.1
Doubling time extrapolates a growth multiplier and depends on the assumption that the measured growth persists. Use this tool to calculate the stated observation or conditional model from supplied measurements.
When to use Arxiv Preprint Velocity Doubling Fields Monitoring Note
Use this tool to calculate the stated observation or conditional model from supplied measurements. Identify the exact document, framework or record edition and the scope of the comparison.
How to use Arxiv Preprint Velocity Doubling Fields Monitoring Note and understand its results
- Identify the exact document, framework or record edition and the scope of the comparison.
- Enter callerFieldIds, previousWindowPreprintCounts, currentWindowPreprintCounts, matchedWindowDurationDays, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
- Read result.observedGrowthMultipliers, result.multiplierKnownFlags, result.conditionalDoublingDays. Interpret each field using the units, signs and evidence rules below.
- If input validation fails, correct the reported field and run again. Before applying a successful result, check the stated reference scope, units, assumptions and any retained unknown evidence.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| callerFieldIds | Caller field ids | list of string | Required |
| previousWindowPreprintCounts | Previous window preprint counts | list of number | Required |
| currentWindowPreprintCounts | Current window preprint counts | list of number | Required |
| matchedWindowDurationDays | Matched window duration days | number | Required |
Supply nonempty unique nonblank field IDs and aligned previous/current integer counts from 0 to 1000000000. Require positive matched-window duration in days. For positive previous counts, divide current by previous; a zero previous count returns multiplier 0 with known flag 0. Estimate doubling days only for multipliers>1 as duration×ln2/ln(multiplier); otherwise return −1. A −1 is an unavailable growth extrapolation, not negative elapsed time. No arXiv retrieval or field assignment occurs.
multiplier_i=current_i/previous_i when previous_i>0, else placeholder0 with knownFlag0; doublingDays_i=durationDays×ln2/ln(multiplier_i) when multiplier_i>1, else−1 Apply the field units and exact ordering, boundary and evidence rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| result | Structured result containing the calculation or selected reference fields below | object |
| result.observedGrowthMultipliers | Current/previous count ratio, with placeholder 0 where the known flag is 0 | list of number |
| result.multiplierKnownFlags | Per-field 1 when previous count>0, else 0 indicating an unavailable multiplier | list of number |
| result.conditionalDoublingDays | Per-field extrapolated doubling days when multiplier>1; −1 when unavailable | list of number |

Doubling time extrapolates a growth multiplier and depends on the assumption that the measured growth persists. Results depend on the independently established measurement basis and the exact model assumptions above.
Every listed input requires an explicit value. Unexpected fields, incorrect value types, nonfinite numbers and sparse numeric arrays fail validation; tool-specific bounds and alignment rules apply as described above. Extremely large inputs or outputs can also be rejected. An input error is distinct from a successful calculation that reports a false comparison or retains unknown evidence.
