Description

A Codenames-style word board assigns hidden roles to 25 words.

A Codenames-style word board assigns hidden roles to 25 words.1

This tool samples caller-supplied words and returns an aligned role key with nine red, eight blue, seven neutral and one assassin position, so the host must keep the key separate from players.

When to use Codenames Board Generator

Use this tool to apply the stated codenames board generator operation with an explicit input and unit basis.

How to use Codenames Board Generator and how it works

  1. Establish the text or game convention described above.
  2. Enter seed, callerCandidateWords and run the tool.
  3. Read result.boardWords, result.secretRoles using the output meanings below.
  4. If input is rejected, correct the stated type, range, ordering or alignment issue and rerun; review successful results under the declared convention.
Input fieldMeaningValue typeRequirement
seedNonblank reproducibility seed; at most 256 UTF-16 code units.stringrequired; further conditions in the algorithm
callerCandidateWordsCandidate Words. Units, ordering and applicable branch are specified in the algorithm.array of stringrequired; dense; align related rows as specified; at most 128 strings; 128 UTF-16 units each; further conditions in the algorithm

Require at least 25 distinct nonblank words. Draw 25 without replacement, independently shuffle the stated 25-role inventory with the same advancing source and return aligned flat arrays. The role distribution supports a red-start convention; the output itself does not conceal the key. A nonblank seed of at most 256 characters selects the existing seeded generator unless execution context supplies random. One source advances through the request; supplied samples must be finite in [0,1). These draws are not cryptographically secure.

The default source hashes the seed’s UTF-16 units into an integer state and advances a deterministic arithmetic generator for each sample. A supplied execution-context random source takes precedence and must return finite values in [0,1). The required seed still must be nonblank and at most 256 UTF-16 code units. These draws provide reproducible sampling without cryptographic unpredictability.2

25 aligned words and roles; role counts = 9 red, 8 blue, 7 neutral, 1 assassin

Apply the declared units, ordering and branch conditions.

Limitations and assumptions

The output applies the declared operation to the values you supply. Establish the measurement basis, units, coefficients and any caller-selected rules before interpreting it. The tool does not independently collect or verify observations or decide whether a model or reference applies.

Supply explicit required fields with the documented types and dense aligned arrays. Unknown fields, wrong types and nonfinite numbers are rejected. Branch-specific constraints are explained above. A returned boolean, signed difference or tied result follows the stated convention; an input error instead means the required input contract was not satisfied. Very large inputs or outputs may be rejected by shared resource limits.

Alternative or Complementary methods

For a related operation, use Rubik's Cube Scramble Generator. Cube scramble notation records face turns using U, R, F, D, L and B with optional prime or double-turn suffixes.

For a related operation, use Boggle Grid Generator. A Boggle-style grid uses one face from each letter cube.
