Measurement Uncertainty Parenthesis Unit Gap Tool

Check supplied uncertainty/value unit labels and construct a parenthesis suffix; digits are already aligned by the caller.

Description

Compare valueUnit and uncertaintyUnit literally; return a shared-unit suffix when equal or an explicit separate-unit suffix otherwise.

Measurement uncertainty notation needs a declared numerical scale, unit and interpretation. Parenthesized digits can refer to the last written places, while a coverage-factor suffix is only a label unless an uncertainty calculation supports it.

Compare valueUnit and uncertaintyUnit literally; return a shared-unit suffix when equal or an explicit separate-unit suffix otherwise.

When to use this tool

Use Measurement Uncertainty Parenthesis Unit Gap when you need the specified uncertainty-text layout or last-place conversion.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter valueUnit, uncertaintyUnit, uncertaintyDigits. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read sharesUnit, displaySuffix. Inspect sharesUnit before interpreting the associated values.

Require unsigned uncertaintyDigits. Compare valueUnit and uncertaintyUnit literally; return a shared-unit suffix when equal or an explicit separate-unit suffix otherwise.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • String equality is not unit equivalence. The digits are not scaled, an uncertainty is not estimated, and the value itself is not formatted.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use an appropriate uncertainty analysis and reporting convention for real measurements. Verify units, decimal alignment, uncertainty type and coverage meaning separately from formatting.
