Shade Removal Stream Temperature Increase Estimator

Apply caller linear shade-loss/stream-temperature calibration to matched shade observations weighted by represented stream length; signed shade gains/cooling remain, with no universal hydrological response.

Description

Shade removal can be linked to stream temperature through an independently calibrated response coefficient.

Shade removal can be linked to stream temperature through an independently calibrated response coefficient. Length weighting preserves the exposure represented by different stream sections.1

Apply caller linear shade-loss/stream-temperature calibration to matched shade observations weighted by represented stream length; signed shade gains/cooling remain, with no universal hydrological response.

When to use Shade Removal Stream Temperature Increase Estimator

Use this tool to apply caller linear shade-loss/stream-temperature calibration to matched shade observations weighted by represented stream length; signed shade gains/cooling remain, with no universal hydrological response.

Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.

How to use Shade Removal Stream Temperature Increase Estimator and understand its results

  1. Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.
  2. Enter preHarvestShadeFractions, postHarvestShadeFractions, representedStreamLengthsM, callerTemperatureCPerLostShadeFraction using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read localSignedShadeLossFractions, lengthWeightedShadeLossFraction, modelTemperatureChangeC. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

callerTemperatureCPerLostShadeFractionCaller temperature c per lost shade fractionnumberRequired

Pair shade fractions in [0,1] with positive represented stream meters. Compute signed local losses, their length-weighted mean and signed Celsius temperature change using the supplied finite coefficient.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

shade loss=before fraction−after fraction; model ΔT=length-weighted loss × caller coefficient

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Shade gains and modeled cooling remain signed. No universal hydrological response is embedded.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Watershed Clearcut Percent Threshold Checker: Audit independently supplied nonoverlapping subcatchment clearcut inventories against caller thresholds and aggregate area, preserving local exceedances; no watershed routing or regulatory/hydrological safety certification. For a complementary task, use Understory Cover Percentage: Aggregate area-weighted understory point-layer cover, preserving overlapping layer totals separately from the union; unlike an existing single canopy-area percentage, multiple cover layers are not double counted in union.
