First Season Seedling Survival Percent

Separate first-season tagged survival among located seedlings from whole-cohort bounds for unlocated tags; missing plants are not forced dead or alive.

Description

Missing seedling tags leave survival uncertain rather than automatically dead.

Missing seedling tags leave survival uncertain rather than automatically dead. Located survival and whole-cohort extreme bounds answer different questions.1

Separate first-season tagged survival among located seedlings from whole-cohort bounds for unlocated tags; missing plants are not forced dead or alive.

When to use First Season Seedling Survival Percent

Use this tool to separate first-season tagged survival among located seedlings from whole-cohort bounds for unlocated tags; missing plants are not forced dead or alive.

Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.

How to use First Season Seedling Survival Percent and understand its results

  1. Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.
  2. Enter originalTaggedSeedlingCount, confirmedAliveCount, confirmedDeadCount, unlocatedTaggedCount using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read observedAliveFractionAmongLocated, wholeCohortSurvivalFractionBounds, unlocatedCohortFraction. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
originalTaggedSeedlingCountOriginal tagged seedling countintegerRequired
confirmedAliveCountConfirmed alive countintegerRequired
confirmedDeadCountConfirmed dead countintegerRequired
unlocatedTaggedCountUnlocated tagged countintegerRequired

Use a positive integer original tagged count and nonnegative integer alive/dead/unlocated counts that exactly exhaust it. Require at least one located seedling. Return located survival, whole-cohort bounds and unlocated fraction.

located survival=alive/(alive+dead); cohort bounds=[alive/total,(alive+unlocated)/total]

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The bounds assign all missing plants dead or alive at opposite extremes. No missingness correction or forecast survival is supplied.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Deer Browse Leader Impact Percent: Summarize caller identified browsed leaders on observable opportunities with whole-inventory bounds for missing assessments; browse agents are not automatically attributed to deer. For a complementary task, use Natural Regeneration Stock Minimum Count Tool: Audit field regeneration counts against caller local minimum density, retaining patch-level shortfall rather than hiding unstocked plots in the pooled density; not legal stocking compliance.
