Skid Trail Density Percent Area

Account supplied trail strip areas and independently measured overlap before computing harvested-area occupation; no coordinate footprint construction or simple summed-overlap cover assumption.

Description

Trail occupation estimates can double-count overlapping strips if their areas are simply added.

Trail occupation estimates can double-count overlapping strips if their areas are simply added. An independently measured overlap correction keeps gross and corrected areas separate.1

Account supplied trail strip areas and independently measured overlap before computing harvested-area occupation; no coordinate footprint construction or simple summed-overlap cover assumption.

When to use Skid Trail Density Percent Area

Use this tool to account supplied trail strip areas and independently measured overlap before computing harvested-area occupation; no coordinate footprint construction or simple summed-overlap cover assumption.

Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.

How to use Skid Trail Density Percent Area and understand its results

  1. Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.
  2. Enter trailSegmentLengthsM, trailSegmentWidthsM, measuredOverlapAreaM2, harvestAreaM2 using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read grossTrailStripAreaM2, overlapCorrectedTrailAreaM2, trailAreaOccupationPercent. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
trailSegmentLengthsMTrail segment lengths mlist of numberRequired
trailSegmentWidthsMTrail segment widths mlist of numberRequired
measuredOverlapAreaM2Measured overlap area m2numberRequired
harvestAreaM2Harvest area m2numberRequired

Use positive harvest m², paired nonnegative trail lengths/widths and nonnegative overlap no greater than gross area. Require corrected area≤harvest area. Return gross/corrected m² and occupied percentage.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

gross area=Σlength × width; corrected area=gross−measured overlap

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No coordinate footprint or overlap geometry is computed. Measured overlap must represent the required aggregate correction.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Scarification Soil Disturbance Percent: Audit observed scarification point disturbance with physical representation weights and caller upper limit; no beneficial soil-preparation assumption or ecological/regulatory suitability certification. For a complementary task, use Watershed Road Density km/km²: Aggregate nonoverlapping local road-length/area inventories and caller density exceedances, not simple averaging of unequal catchments; road locations and drainage connectivity are not inferred.
