Dart Leg Length Residual Tool

Calculate dart leg length residual from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return firstLeg-minus-secondLeg.

A pattern's seam and closure dimensions combine finished lengths with allowances, overlaps and offsets. A local length budget describes an ideal construction; fabric thickness, movement and fitting can change the practical result.

Return firstLeg-minus-secondLeg.

When to use this tool

Use Dart Leg Length Residual when you need a local pattern, seam or closure dimension check.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstLeg, secondLeg. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read residual. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative dart-leg lengths. Return firstLeg-minus-secondLeg.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
firstLegFirst LegRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
secondLegSecond LegRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is a signed local length check, without tolerance, point geometry, trueing or an actual pattern edit.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check the complete pattern and make an appropriate sample in the intended material. Review seam construction, allowances, shrinkage and fitting rather than treating one margin as complete garment validation.
