Phylogenetic Node Age Branch Residual Tool

Ages are measured backward from the same present; inconsistent supplied node ordering remains an explicit flag.

Description

Return parentAge-childAge and its residual against branch duration, plus consistentOrder for parent at least child.

Evolutionary time and branch length are linked through a supplied clock or calibration. A unit conversion, path sum or residual assumes the underlying tree and rate model rather than recovering them from biological data.

Return parentAge-childAge and its residual against branch duration, plus consistentOrder for parent at least child.

When to use this tool

Use Phylogenetic Node Age Branch Residual when you need one branch-time, path or calibration term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter parentAge, childAge, branchDuration. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read impliedDuration, residual, consistentOrder. Inspect consistentOrder before interpreting the associated values.

Require nonnegative node ages/branch duration. Return parentAge-childAge and its residual against branch duration, plus consistentOrder for parent at least child.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • A negative implied duration is returned with false, rather than automatically rejected. Ages share a before-present reference and actual topology/calibration are not validated.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a complete phylogenetic or dating method with the relevant sequence, fossil and rate evidence. Verify topology, branch units, calibration assumptions and uncertainty separately.
