Indirect Standardization One Expected Count Tool

One expected-count stratum and its observed/expected ratio; aggregate SMR requires sums across all strata.

Loading tool…

Description

Compute expectedCount = studyPopulation*referenceRate and observedExpectedRatio = observedCount/expectedCount.

Standardization separates population composition from event frequency. Direct standardization weights stratum-specific rates; indirect standardization applies reference rates to study populations to form expected counts. A single term is only part of either full calculation.

Compute expectedCount = studyPopulation*referenceRate and observedExpectedRatio = observedCount/expectedCount.

When to use this tool

Use Indirect Standardization One Expected Count when checking one supplied standardization contribution and its declared population and rate basis.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter studyPopulation, referenceRate, observedCount. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read expectedCount, observedExpectedRatio. Use the output convention below.

Require positive studyPopulation and referenceRate and a nonnegative whole observedCount. Compute expectedCount = studyPopulation*referenceRate and observedExpectedRatio = observedCount/expectedCount. referenceRate must be events per one population unit for the matching period; divide a published per-100000 rate by 100000 first.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
studyPopulationStudy-population exposure on the denominator basis of referenceRate.Required. Finite number; strictly above 0.
referenceRateReference events per one population unit over the matching study period, not a per-100000 magnitude.Required. Finite number; strictly above 0.
observedCountObserved CountRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
expectedCountExpected CountRequired. Finite number.
observedExpectedRatioObserved Expected RatioRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is one expected-count contribution and its ratio, not a complete multistratum standardized mortality ratio or confidence interval. Matching time periods, case definitions and reference-population suitability are caller responsibilities.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Assemble all comparable strata and suitable weights or reference rates before interpreting a complete standardized estimate.
