Soil Moisture Wet Dry Basis Pair Tool

Calculate soil moisture wet dry basis pair from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Loading tool…

Description

Return waterMass = wetMass-dryMass, dryBasis = waterMass/dryMass and wetBasis = waterMass/wetMass.

Mass-based environmental quantities depend on their basis: gross versus tare-corrected mass, wet versus dry solids, or material versus void volume. A ratio or density conversion is meaningful only when those bases and units agree.

Return waterMass = wetMass-dryMass, dryBasis = waterMass/dryMass and wetBasis = waterMass/wetMass.

When to use this tool

Use Soil Moisture Wet Dry Basis Pair when reconciling supplied environmental masses, solids fractions or material volumes.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter wetMass, dryMass. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read waterMass, dryBasis, wetBasis. Use the output convention below.

Require positive dryMass and wetMass >= dryMass. Return waterMass = wetMass-dryMass, dryBasis = waterMass/dryMass and wetBasis = waterMass/wetMass. Use a common mass unit; both ratios are fractions rather than percentages.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The dry-basis ratio may exceed one, while the wet-basis ratio is below one for positive dry mass. No drying protocol, volatile loss, porosity or volumetric moisture conversion is modeled.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use measured density, method-specific moisture procedures and uncertainty analysis where simple homogeneous-material assumptions are insufficient.
