Rainwater First Flush Diversion Volume Tool

Calculate rainwater first flush diversion volume from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Loading tool…

Description

Return diversionVolume = catchmentArea*flushDepth*runoffFraction.

A volume estimate connects an area and depth, a flow and time, or a storage balance. Coherent units and explicit reserves distinguish physical volume from usable capacity; a valid quantity balance does not establish water quality or structural adequacy.

Return diversionVolume = catchmentArea*flushDepth*runoffFraction.

When to use this tool

Use Rainwater First Flush Diversion Volume when checking a supplied volume conversion, reserve or storage balance.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter catchmentArea, flushDepth, runoffFraction. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read diversionVolume. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative catchmentArea and flushDepth and runoffFraction in [0,1]. Return diversionVolume = catchmentArea*flushDepth*runoffFraction. Use coherent area and depth units: m² times m gives m³; convert a depth entered in millimeters before using that combination.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is a supplied first-flush volume term, not tank sizing, treatment design or a recommendation of a suitable first-flush depth. No contaminant removal or water potability is established.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a hydraulic model, actual tank geometry and qualified design criteria when time-varying flow or practical capacity matters.
