Household Water Storage Residual Volume Tool

Calculate household water storage residual volume from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return physicalVolume = opening+incoming-drawn-evaporation, usableVolume = max(0,physicalVolume-unusableReserve) and shortfall = max(0,unusableReserve-physicalVolume).

A volume estimate connects an area and depth, a flow and time, or a storage balance. Coherent units and explicit reserves distinguish physical volume from usable capacity; a valid quantity balance does not establish water quality or structural adequacy.

Return physicalVolume = opening+incoming-drawn-evaporation, usableVolume = max(0,physicalVolume-unusableReserve) and shortfall = max(0,unusableReserve-physicalVolume).

When to use this tool

Use Household Water Storage Residual Volume when checking a supplied volume conversion, reserve or storage balance.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter opening, incoming, drawn, evaporation, unusableReserve. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read physicalVolume, usableVolume, shortfall. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative opening, incoming, drawn, evaporation and unusableReserve, with drawn+evaporation <= opening+incoming. Return physicalVolume = opening+incoming-drawn-evaporation, usableVolume = max(0,physicalVolume-unusableReserve) and shortfall = max(0,unusableReserve-physicalVolume).1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use one volume unit. The reserve is a supplied usability assumption; quantity balance does not establish water potability, availability through plumbing or contamination control.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a hydraulic model, actual tank geometry and qualified design criteria when time-varying flow or practical capacity matters.
