Environmental Source Basis Gap Tool

Compare bench concentrations on explicit caller-supplied reporting bases without exposure limits.

Description

Convert commonBasisValue = reportedConcentration*sourceBasisFactor and referenceBasisValue = suppliedReferenceValue*referenceBasisFactor, then return gap = commonBasisValue-referenceBasisValue.

Environmental measurements can require background subtraction, recovery correction, calibration or a common reference basis. Corrected values can be signed; a numerical correction is separate from detection, analytical validity and health interpretation.

Convert commonBasisValue = reportedConcentration*sourceBasisFactor and referenceBasisValue = suppliedReferenceValue*referenceBasisFactor, then return gap = commonBasisValue-referenceBasisValue.

When to use this tool

Use Environmental Source Basis Gap when checking a supplied measurement correction, comparison or calibration term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter reportedConcentration, sourceBasisFactor, referenceBasisFactor, suppliedReferenceValue. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read commonBasisValue, referenceBasisValue, gap. Use the output convention below.

Require positive sourceBasisFactor and referenceBasisFactor. Convert commonBasisValue = reportedConcentration*sourceBasisFactor and referenceBasisValue = suppliedReferenceValue*referenceBasisFactor, then return gap = commonBasisValue-referenceBasisValue.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Both factors must convert their respective inputs to the same final unit and wet/dry, reference-state or normalization basis. Signed values are accepted; no conversion factors, standards or safe levels are automatically selected.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the relevant analytical method, quality-control records and uncertainty model before classifying a corrected measurement.
