Description

Return massPerDay = concentration*volumePerDay, totalMass = massPerDay*days and massPerBodyMassDay = massPerDay/bodyMass.

Exposure arithmetic combines a concentration with time, intake or body mass on an explicit averaging basis. Integrated contact, average concentration, ingested mass and absorbed dose are different quantities and should not be substituted for each other.

Return massPerDay = concentration*volumePerDay, totalMass = massPerDay*days and massPerBodyMassDay = massPerDay/bodyMass.

When to use this tool

Use Drinking Water Concentration Intake Volume Term when checking a supplied exposure integration or averaging denominator.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter concentration, volumePerDay, days, bodyMass. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read massPerDay, totalMass, massPerBodyMassDay. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative concentration, volumePerDay and days and positive bodyMass. Return massPerDay = concentration*volumePerDay, totalMass = massPerDay*days and massPerBodyMassDay = massPerDay/bodyMass. For concentration in mg/L, volume in L/day and body mass in kg, the outputs are mg/day, mg and mg/(kg·day).1

Water-ingestion dose assessment distinguishes concentration, intake rate, body mass and exposure-frequency or averaging factors. This tool returns the constant daily mass terms and total mass, without those broader exposure adjustments.2

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is constant daily ingested mass arithmetic without exposure-frequency or lifetime averaging, absorption, toxicokinetics or a toxicity comparison. Zero days makes totalMass zero but does not alter the computed daily terms; the tool does not recommend a safe intake.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a suitable exposure assessment with frequency, routes, variability and toxicological context when the question concerns health consequences.
