Rainwater Tank Freeboard Volume Term Tool

Calculate rainwater tank freeboard volume term from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return physicalEmptyVolume = planArea*(totalHeight-waterHeight), usableEmptyVolume = max(0,planArea*(totalHeight-freeboardHeight-waterHeight)) and freeboardVolume = planArea*freeboardHeight.

A volume estimate connects an area and depth, a flow and time, or a storage balance. Coherent units and explicit reserves distinguish physical volume from usable capacity; a valid quantity balance does not establish water quality or structural adequacy.

Return physicalEmptyVolume = planArea*(totalHeight-waterHeight), usableEmptyVolume = max(0,planArea*(totalHeight-freeboardHeight-waterHeight)) and freeboardVolume = planArea*freeboardHeight.

When to use this tool

Use Rainwater Tank Freeboard Volume Term when checking a supplied volume conversion, reserve or storage balance.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter planArea, totalHeight, waterHeight, freeboardHeight. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read physicalEmptyVolume, usableEmptyVolume, freeboardVolume. Use the output convention below.

Require positive planArea, nonnegative totalHeight and waterHeight <= totalHeight, and freeboardHeight between zero and totalHeight. Return physicalEmptyVolume = planArea*(totalHeight-waterHeight), usableEmptyVolume = max(0,planArea*(totalHeight-freeboardHeight-waterHeight)) and freeboardVolume = planArea*freeboardHeight.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Water height must also be nonnegative. A prismatic constant-area tank is assumed; freeboard is reserved rather than counted as usable storage. The outputs do not establish overflow routing, structural capacity or safe tank design.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a hydraulic model, actual tank geometry and qualified design criteria when time-varying flow or practical capacity matters.
