Trap Catch By Catch Share

Calculate the explicitly counted bycatch share using a caller-selected unidentified-catch denominator policy.

Description

Calculate a trap's bycatch share under an explicit unidentified-catch policy.

Insect observations distinguish specimen anatomy, taxonomic sources, recorded visits, catch categories and sampling effort. Bulb-hours differ from elapsed trap-hours, and a landmark length/width ratio differs from an aerodynamic wing aspect ratio. Nondetection, missing observation and uncertain classification require their own record states.

Calculate a trap's bycatch share under an explicit unidentified-catch policy.

When to use this tool

Use Trap Catch By Catch Share when you already have targetCatch, bycatch, unidentifiedCatch, includeUnidentified and need to calculate a trap's bycatch share under an explicit unidentified-catch policy.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter targetCatch, bycatch, unidentifiedCatch, includeUnidentified. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read denominator, bycatchShare, defined. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.

Require nonnegative safe whole counts; denominator=target+bycatch+(includeUnidentified?unidentified:0). Return bycatch/denominator or zero with defined=false for zero denominator.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
targetCatchTarget CatchRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
bycatchBycatchRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
unidentifiedCatchUnidentified CatchRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
includeUnidentifiedInclude UnidentifiedRequired. Boolean.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
denominatorTarget+bycatch+optional unidentified counts; must remain a safe integer.Required. Safe integer.
bycatchShareBycatch ShareRequired. Finite number.
definedFalse for denominator=0, with bycatchShare=0 placeholder.Required. Boolean.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Zero placeholder differs from observed zero share. An unsafe integer denominator is rejected; taxonomy, overlapping classifications and capture bias are not assessed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect original specimens, images, recordings and trap logs when verifying observations. Use the complete survey and calibration method for abundance or behavioral conclusions, preserving effort, detection and taxonomic definitions rather than treating one rate or label as that analysis.
